HART SENT OFF

Town Beat United in Senior Cup Final

PENALTY DECIDES

A regrettable incident arose out of the Weat Riding Senior Cup final, at Valley Parade, Bradford, last night, where Huddersfield Town beat Leeds United by one goal to nil. Near the interval there was a mix up in the United rear, and a penalty was awarded against them. Hart seemingly protested to the referee against the award, following what appeared to be a case of handling the ball by an opponent, and the upshot was that the Leeds captain was ordered off by the referee, Mr. J. E. Mellor, of Bradford. Seen after the match, the referee said that he awarded the penalty because he had judged a Leeds defender guilty of pushing an opponent. The case is under the jurisdiction of the West Riding F.A. Before the unfortunate happening, Hart had been the outstanding player on the field. Though the pitch was very soft on top, and the slippery surface troubled most of the players, the United centre half overcame the conditions in good style, and his work on the attack was a feature of the first half. Playing in red, Town won the toss, and early on Bott tested Moore, who played a good game throughout in the United goal. He later saved on his knees from Young, while the way he subsequently pushed out a strong ground shot from McLean was positively brilliant. United (who were playing in white), however, had much the better of the game, their half backs lending strong support to the forward line, with Hydes a hard worker. Fowler and Hart both tested Turner, who played his usual sound game. Then came the penalty award, from which Mountford scored what proved to be the deciding goal. On the change of ends, Copping went to centre half, and Fith moved to left half. The four United forwards, however, made strenuous efforts, and Mahon, Duggan and Copping all went near, despite sound defensive work by Goodall, Mountford and Christie. At the conclusion of the game Alderman J. W. Longley, the Lord Mayor of Bradford, on the introduction of Mr. W. L. Hardcastle (President of the West Riding County F.A.), presented the cup to the Town captain, and cases of cutlery of equal value to the players of both teams. The attendance numbered only 2,700, with gross receipts of £172.
